INAGURAL DISNEY WORLD INLINE MARATHON
March 30, 2003: Over 1,500 inline skaters from
40 U.S. states and nine countries competed at the first Walt Disney's
World inline Marathon in Orlando, Florida on Saturday, instantly
making it the 2nd Largest Inline Marathon in the US.
The course consisted of many corners from tight hairpins to fast sweeping bends, it went down Hollywood Boulevard inside the Disney-MGM Studios and along the coastal village at Disney's Boardwalk Resort, before going past the 11 nations of the World at Epcot. The race then looped back to the Wide World of Sports Complex for the half marathon finish; with the 42km skates completing one more lap.
The Pro men's race was won in a photo finish by Hyper's Diego Roserio from Colombia, who out stretched Rollerblade's Jordan Malone from Texas the time of 1 hr, 9 min, 17 sec. Both skaters receiving finish straight lead-outs from their teammates, Chad Hedrick (Hyper) and Jorge Botero (Rollerblade). Verducci's Jonathan Webster from Florida finishing a very fast 3rd helped to the line by fellow team mates, Steven Krawulski 6th, Forth Lacey 7th, Joey Mantia 12th, Terrence Allmond, Dane Lewis, Jason Sepulveda, and Derek Downing.
The Pro women's race was won by Hyper's Cecilia Baena from Colombia with a time of 1 hr, 22 min, 51 sec, 2nd was Powerslide's Julie Glass from Washington. The Pro women's race was run with few breakaways, all waiting for the sprint finish, Team Verducci's Jessica Smith and Theresa Cliff missing an opportunity and clashing with other skates as they lined up for the final sprint resulted in 4th and 5th respectively. Also racing for Verducci was Brittany Bowe 10th, Jilleane Rookard 14th, Kristen St.Nicholas 16th, and Heidi Miller 24th.
